After what surely must have been 14 long years of marriage, former pop diva finally has gotten around to initiating divorce proceedings against .

Word is that she served him with divorce papers on Tuesday. Houston, who lives in Alpharetta, Ga., expects to file officially for divorce next month. But my million-dollar question is: Why is she doing this now?

For one thing, the Bravo Network is still airing repeat episodes of "Being Bobby Brown," that nutsy program in which the couple's dysfunctions are played out for a TV audience.

Brown, who once was a member of New Edition, supposedly is off drugs. Again. And yeah, there've been all those reports linking Brown with (aka Supahead, for her servicing of hip-hop superstars). But who hasn't been with her? Besides, sources told TMZ.com that there's nothing going on between Brown and Stevens, author of "Confessions of a Video Vixen."

Judging from all the eyebrow-raising reports since their 1992 marriage, Houston and Brown already have survived enough drama to fuel a month of miniseries. Yet somehow they managed to defy the odds and stay together a whole lot longer than most other Hollywood hook-ups do.

Seriously, though, if the Bobby Brown-Whitney Houston saga weren't so sad, what has happened would be downright laughable. In the words of one of her hit songs, Houston "almost had it all."

By now, everybody knows her story. A former teen model, she was a singing sensation following the release of her debut album, which sold 24 million records.

More hits followed, plus a movie career that had her starring opposite in "The Bodyguard." Houston was America's darling. The sweet-faced girl from the New Jersey suburbs who made it big.

From outward appearances, they were a complete mismatch. I can still remember the photos that Ebony magazine published of her wedding day. She was gorgeous, in a beaded headpiece. The wedding featured 8,000 purple and lavender roses and orchids. I remember gazing at her and him in the photos, and I just couldn't see it.

In hindsight, it would be easy to blame Brown for the pathetic state of Houston's life today. But that wouldn't be fair. Because you can't blame someone's substance abuse on anyone but the person who winds up using. Ultimately, the decision to abuse drugs falls on the user and the user alone.

So, yes, Brown had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as run-ins with police, but you can't lay the blame on him for Houston's sad undoing.

Last January, her sister-in-law, , snapped photos of the filthy bathroom in Houston's home where she alleged that Houston smokes crack and uses sex toys.

I hope that their divorce will mark the start of a sober and sane beginning for both of them. It would be the least that they could do for their daughter, .
