There have been heated scenes in the New South Wales Parliament over revelations newly-endorsed Liberal candidate Greg Smith informed a colleague about the alleged discovery of child pornography on his computer, before informing police.

Mr Smith, who is also the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), says he did nothing wrong when he called senior Crown prosecutor Patrick Power before the police, when the images were allegedly found in July.

"Only a week ago, you had the Leader of the Opposition pretending to be tough on child sex offenders, saying and doing anything to get a headline," he said.

"After discussions with Mr Cowdery, who was interstate at the time, I followed his instruction and rang Mr Power and asked him to urgently come into the office," he said.

Mr Smith, who won a preselection battle against Pru Goward for the Sydney seat of Epping, says the story is an attempt to politically damage him.
